HB 1481 New Cell Phone Law

As you have likely heard, Governor Abbott has signed Texas House Bill 1481 into law. The new law is being referred to as the “Cell Phone Ban”.

What the Law Says

1  Students may not use wireless communication devices on school property during the instructional day. All wireless communication devices, other than school-issued laptops, are prohibited. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and personal laptops.

2  School districts must adopt policies to comply with the new law.

Lexington ISD will update policies as the Texas Education Agency releases specific implementation requirements to Texas school districts.

We are communicating with you at this time so that all of our families will be prepared for the change when school starts in August. We would like our community to understand that this was not a local decision, but rather a law enacted by the Governor and State Legislature. We will provide you with updated information on the new law as it becomes available.
