LISD Custom Cruiser Record Player

Lexington High School’s piece “Garden of Music” represents how different genres come
together to create something unified and beautiful, like flowers in a garden. Each flower stands
for a specific genre, and the vines connecting them show how music can “band together.” Every
flower captures the spirit of its genre through the materials we used. For example, the indie
flower glows with melted CDs. Hard rock’s petals are dark with small clay bones, while pop
stands out with bright, reflective petals. Indie folk is a soft purple lavender, and classical is
coated in gold with sheet music layered on top. Country blooms from cow pelt petals, and punk
bursts out as a bright pink thistle. The record player underneath is covered in moss and rocks to
represent the ground that music grows from. The vines weaving through everything represent
how all genres connect and influence one another. And this piece doesn’t just band music
together; working on this project banded us together. Participants from different grades, ages,
and friend groups all collaborated on this project. Most of us didn’t even see each other since
we had different class periods, but the result of our teamwork showed in the final product. To us,
this piece shows that music (and people), like nature, thrives in its differences. Every genre has
its own sound and beauty, but when they come together, they create one big, connected garden
— banded together in harmony. The record player was designed and created by the following
